Rae Rae’s Second Chance: How a Partially Blind Dachshund Found Her Forever Home After Losing Everything
After losing the only person she had ever known, Rae Rae, a tiny, partially blind 10-pound Dachshund mix, found herself sitting alone in one of Georgia’s most overcrowded animal shelters.
She couldn’t see what was happening around her.
Instead, she listened.
The constant barking.
The cries of frightened dogs.
The clang of kennel doors opening and slamming shut.
For a dog who had spent her life in the comfort of a home, it was a terrifying new world.
What made her story even more heartbreaking was that Rae Rae wasn’t abandoned because someone stopped loving her. Her owner had entered hospice care, and after their passing, Rae Rae and her sister, Sadie, were left with nowhere to go.
In an instant, everything familiar disappeared.
The people they trusted.
The home they loved.
The life they knew.
Like so many senior dogs who lose their families due to illness, Rae Rae and Sadie became two more frightened faces in an already overcrowded shelter system.
A Rescue That Changed Everything
Thanks to the incredible compassion of our supporters, Rae Rae, and Sadie were safely transported to Dr. Terry, where they finally had a chance to begin healing.
Both girls were frightened and confused, but beneath their uncertainty was something beautiful. They were incredibly gentle, affectionate, and eager to trust again.
During their stay, they received the veterinary care they desperately needed, including comprehensive exams, spay surgery, dental care, and treatment for years of neglected medical needs.
For the first time in a long time, someone was focused entirely on giving them comfort instead of simply helping them survive.
Rae Rae’s Happy Ending
Today, we are overjoyed to share the news we have been hoping for.
Rae Rae has been adopted.
This sweet little girl, who once sat in a shelter unable to understand why her world had disappeared, is now safe in a loving forever home where she will never have to wonder if she belongs again.
For every person who donated, shared her story, or kept her in their thoughts, you helped make this ending possible.
This is what rescue is all about.
One dog.
One family.
One second chance that changes everything.
Sadie
Sadie is now thriving in a loving foster home where she’s experiencing stability, kindness, and the comfort of a safe place to rest while she waits for her forever family.
She has come so far since leaving the shelter, but what she wants most can’t be provided by a foster home alone.
Someone to love for the rest of her life.
We know that family is out there; we just haven’t found them yet.
A Growing Reality We Can’t Ignore
Sadly, Rae Rae and Sadie’s story is becoming increasingly common.
Every week, we meet beloved dogs whose owners have become seriously ill, entered hospice, moved into assisted living, or passed away, leaving their pets with nowhere to go.
Many end up frightened and confused in shelters through no fault of their own.
These aren’t unwanted dogs.
They are deeply loved companions whose lives changed overnight because no long-term plan had been made for their care.
One of the greatest gifts we can give our pets is a plan for what happens if we’re no longer able to care for them.
Having a trusted person, a legally documented arrangement, and conversations before a crisis occurs can spare them from experiencing the fear and uncertainty that Rae Rae, and Sadie endured.
Thank You for Giving Rae Rae Her Second Chance
Rae Rae’s story is proof that rescue changes lives—not only for the dogs, but for the families who welcome them home.
Because of your compassion, a tiny, partially blind senior dog who had lost everything now has everything she needs: safety, love, and a place to call home.
Sometimes changing a life begins with something as simple as saying, “Come home.”
